There are 3 separate tournaments from 24 to 27 August 2018 - Main, Warm Up and Extra. All tournaments are open to local and oversea players, and all players can enter tournaments free of charge.

Divisions

  • For local players:
    • Players with HKSPA Ratings/WESPA Ratings: They will be allocated to Division A, B or C according to their HKSPA ratings or equivalent based on WESPA ratings (for players without HKSPA Ratings only). The organisers will determine the division of the players after the deadline of application.
    • New local players: They will be assigned to Division D, a division specifically created for players with no prior rated games playing experience.
  • For non-local players: WESPA Ratings will be taken into consideration. Players with 750 or above in WESPA Ratings will play in Division A and those below 750 will play in Division B. Non-local players without HKSPA Ratings nor WESPA Ratings will be assigned to the appropriate divisions by the Association with reference to their ratings of other national associations, if any.
Players with Hong Kong Representation Status under the Hong Kong Player Statuses Regulation are deemed as local players. Ratings are determined as at 3 August 2018, the deadline of application. Players are expected to reserve both days of the tournament when they apply for the tournament, and arrive before the starting time of their division for registration. Players are advised not to contact the organisers to enquire their division assignment before the deadline of application as no information will be available before the deadline.

Division A, B and C will be HKSPA-rated. Furthermore, Division A and B will be WESPA-rated.

Format

Collins Official Scrabble Words 2015 (CSW15) will be used as the official dictionary. Each players has 25 minutes to play each round. WESPA rules version 3 is applicable to all divisions.

  • Division A:
    • 15 rounds from 25 - 26 August. 5 points unsubstantiated “Challenge” penalty.
    • Round 1 - 2: Random Draw
    • Round 3 - 13: Australian Swiss Draw (Lagged draw in Round 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13)
    • Round 14 - 15: King-of-the-Hill (KOTH)
  • Division B:
    • 12 rounds from 25 - 26 August. 5 points unsubstantiated “Challenge” penalty.
    • Round 1 - 2: Random Draw
    • Round 3 - 10: Australian Swiss Draw (Lagged draw in Round 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10)
    • Round 11 - 12: King-of-the-Hill (KOTH)
  • Division C:
    • 4 rounds on 26 August 2018. 5 points unsubstantiated “Challenge” penalty.
    • Round 1: Random Draw
    • Round 2 - 3: Australian Swiss Draw
    • Round 4: King-of-the-Hill (KOTH)
  • Division D1 and D2:
    • 3 rounds on 25 August 2018 (D1) and 26 August 2018 (D2). Free “Challenge”.
    • Round 1: Random Draw
    • Round 2 and 3: Australian Swiss Draw

Prizes

For each division -
  • Champion Award: Trophy
  • 1st Runner-up Award: Medal
  • 2nd Runner-up Award: Medal
  • Best Performance Award (Under 16) (born on or after 25/8/2002): Medal

Prize-winners will also get other prizes on top of the trophy / medal.
All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and souvenirs from Mattel Games.

Adverse Weather Arrangement

Participants should pay attention to the latest announcement of the organizer's website.
  • If Red Rainstorm Signal or above, or No.8 Gale or Storm Signal or above is in force 2 hours before the tournament begins, the tournament will be postponed for one day if possible. The second day of the tournament will replace the Extra Tournament, and the Extra Tournament will be cancelled automatically.
  • If Red Rainstorm Signal or above is in force during the tournament, the tournament will continue if situation allows. If Pre-no.8 Tropical Cyclone Special Announcement is issued during the tournament, the tournament will be terminated as soon as possible. The unfinished rounds will be postponed to the next tournament day / replacing the Extra Tournament. If the Extra Tournament is replaced by the Main Tournament, the Extra Tournament will be cancelled.

Remarks

  • Quota is limited and application will be processed on a first-come-first-served basis. (Limited walk-in application quota will be reserved for Division D)
  • Players will be playing with the Scrabble 70th Anniversary Special Edition provided by the organisers. They are not required to bring any equipment to the venue.
  • Mattel Games sales booth and free play area will be provided.

  • Date: 24 August 2018 (Friday)
  • Time: 9:00am - 6:00pm
  • Venue: General Studies Room, Methodist School, 12 Wylie Road, Ho Man Tin, Kowloon

Details

  • Players will be allocated to single round-robin groups of 8 players according to their HKSPA Ratings.
  • Players will play throughout the day as a warm-up before competition.
  • For those players without HKSPA Ratings, they will be assigned to a group by the organizers with reference to their WESPA Ratings or ratings of other national associations.
  • All groups will be WESPA-rated and HKSPA-rated.
  • 7 rounds, 25 minutes per player, WESPA rules version 3, 5 points unsubstantiated “Challenge” penalty.
  • For each round-robin group, medal will be awarded to the winner.

  • Winner, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up will get a medal.
